SUCCESS STORY

I'm Almeus Silouse, and this is my story

I'm a stroke survivor

I’m from Port-Margot, a four-hour drive to FONHARE in Ouanaminthe. I’m 50 years old. If I’m still alive, I must thank God and FONHARE for the help and care I received after suffering from a stroke in February 2024. Following this stroke, I couldn’t speak; I had facial paralysis, which I’m ashamed to show you. I lost my memory and mobility; I was completely paralyzed on my left side. I was in a wheelchair; I couldn’t stand. Sometimes, I couldn’t call my children, and so I relieved myself. In such a state, it’s true that my eyes were opened, but I saw myself with no hope of returning to normal. Despite my admission to a hospital in Limbe for a long period, nothing had changed in my state of discomfort.

However, the situation was about to change following a request from one of my cousins to my children to take me to FONHARE for therapy. Given my condition, I wasn’t expecting any change, although I didn’t even know what the word “therapy” meant.

Indeed, my children took me in July 2024, two weeks after my admission to FONHARE. I felt a sense of hope because my mouth was improving considerably, and I was beginning to regain my memory. As a result, I wanted to come to the center even on weekends. Today, without assistance, I can bathe, dress, cook, and I’m no longer in a wheelchair; I walk, run, and speak without any difficulty. The FONHARE staff continues to work with me to plan my return to normal activities, just as I did before the stroke. Finally, I sincerely thank the FONHARE healthcare staff and the administration that encouraged me, treated me with love, compassion, respect, and dignity. When I cried, they dried my tears; when I was discouraged, they told me, “Keep going, there is light at the end of the tunnel,” and I realize that was true. Now I’m returning home with all my lost abilities restored. My children and I cannot find enough words to thank FONHARE and all those who support the charity work that FONHARE is doing.

Thank you so much, may God bless you all

Laura's Testimonial

I'm LAURA, This is my story!

I’m 26 years old. I'm from Fort-Liberté. I survived a terrible accident that occurred on August 5, 2024, while returning from a church activity on the Mont-Organisé road. Several people died in this accident; my upper and lower right limbs were crushed, and I underwent several surgeries on both extremities. It was the most difficult time I've ever experienced in my life. I spent a long time in a wheelchair and was completely dependent on the help of others. I experienced moments of deep sadness and even depression because I thought I would definitely be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of my life.

A few months after the surgery, the hospital where I was operated on referred me to
FONHARE for rehabilitation care. However, I didn’t believe I could recover and lead a
normal life. Seeing my condition, life had no meaning for me, and I was also very afraid of therapy. But quite the opposite, when I arrived at FONHARE, I found a family. The staff was persistent, patient, motivating, and friendly. After two weeks, I was no longer afraid, and each session reassured me that I was a step closer to recovery.

After six months of treatment at FONHARE, I was completely recovered. Even I couldn’t
believe that I was living a normal life like before so quickly. If I told someone what I was
like before, they would find it hard to believe because I walk flawlessly and can do everything like before. Although I didn’t have the financial means to pay for all the services I received at FONHARE, I was always treated with love, respect, dignity, patience, and
competence. I am completely grateful to the entire team.

I also thank all those who support FONHARE, and I hope that FONHARE will find assistance
from donors, philanthropists, and kind-hearted men and women so that more people like me can benefit from quality rehabilitation care in Haiti.

A huge thank you from the bottom of my heart.
