Rehabilitation, Handicap Prevention and Maternal-Child Health

IMPLEMENTED PROJECTS AND THEIR IMPACTS

  • Rehabilitation services are implemented by a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, orthoprosthetists and nurses in a clinical setting, assisted by associated medical clinics and hospitals if necessary for referrals. The team provides more thousands treatment sessions and consultations per year at the clinic and FONHARE also organizes home visits to treat patients who cannot leave their homes to come to the clinic. We will receive children with cerebral palsy, neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders such as (Down syndrome, ADHD, autism, etc.), brachial plexus paralysis, malformations of the spine and lower limbs such as (scoliosis, kyphosis, open knees and glued knees , club foot), people with stroke, head injuries, accidental injuries/trauma, sports injuries, spinal cord injuries, peripheral facial paralysis, people with back and waist pain with foot cramps, neck pain with cramps in the arms, osteoarthritis (rheumatism) and rheumatoid arthritis, neurodegenerative conditions, etc.

FONHARE also does prevention aimed at reducing cases of disability among children, young people and adults in Haiti. The three main causes of disability in Haiti are represented by victims of stroke (produced mainly by hypertension and type II diabetes), road accidents and maternal and child health. To reduce these causes, FONHARE educates communities on balanced diet, regular exercise, road safety procedures such as the use of helmets and speed control, and awareness on measures to prevent unwanted pregnancies among adolescents and other dangers linked to sex, on the importance of pre/during/post pregnancy monitoring reducing the number of children born with health complications or disabilities.
