INTERNSHIP

The Haitian Rehabilitation Foundation (FONHARE) is a non-profit humanitarian organization working in the field of rehabilitation and inclusion alongside the most vulnerable people in Haiti. Its mission is to provide holistic and integrated care to vulnerable groups (disabled people, women, children and the elderly), regardless of their economic capacity. And move forward with them towards inclusion to be productive, for themselves, for their families and for society. The service is based on ethics, quality, innovation, a suitable environment and up-to-date staff dedicated to the service.

What does FONHARE do? 

FONHARE provides holistic care and support services to vulnerable people, disabled people or people with functional limitations through rehabilitation programs, disability prevention and maternal and child health (Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Speech therapy and orthopedic equipment) in clinical and community settings. We also offer other programs such as: Inclusion and Universal Accessibility, Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction, Inclusive Humanitarian Response and finally Child Protection and Gender-Based Violence and Disability.

Whether working in a clinical setting at FONHARE, working in our various programs and projects in the communities or providing training opportunities to community health workers, volunteers will have the opportunity to learn and teach, to receive and give, and to experience the wonders of a rich culture with heavenly beaches, music, festivals, enriching gastronomy, a hospitable and courageous people, of a different and unique heritage in the world.

INTERNSHIP

What clinical experience can you have at FONHARE? 

  • The FONHARE clinic offers you an enriching internship experience because you will have the opportunity to do extraordinary learning with all the most common pathologies in rehabilitation. We treat people with congenital malformations (genus varum, genus valgum, flat foot, scoliosis, kyphosis); rheumatological diseases (osteoarthritis and inflammatory rheumatism); diseases and trauma of the musculoskeletal system (orthopedic fractures, sprains, tendon and ligament ruptures, tendinopathies, capsulopathies, amputations, cuff pathology, spine disease, back pain, lumbo-sciatica, brachial plexus injury, polyneuritis, polyradiculoneuritis etc.)
  • Neurological and neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system (cerebrovascular accidents, after-effects of head trauma, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, muscular dystrophies, etc.)
  • Pediatric pathologies (cerebral palsy, dysphasia, dyspraxia, dyslexia, dysgraphia, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, motor developmental delay, premature child, spinal deformities (scoliosis, kyphosis ), neuromuscular diseases, myopathies, rheumatic diseases in children.
  • You will also have the opportunity to carry out universal accessibility assessments in patients’ homes in order to maximize their autonomy in daily life activities.

Since 2014, FONHARE has developed internship partnerships and welcomes physiotherapy and occupational therapy students from universities in Europe and the United States.

HOST INFORMATION

  • Dr. Ivens Louius is a doctor of physiotherapy and licensed in occupational therapy, he has a specialty in prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and certified in cardiovascular & pulmonary rehabilitation, He did a doctorate with an academic specialty with University of Medical Sciences Arizona, United States United. He is the founder and director of FONHARE. He will be your coordinator and director during the internship period. He is originally from the city of Gonaïves, on the northwest coast of Haiti.

HOST INFORMATION

  • Leslie Solage is licensed in physiotherapy, certified in cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation. She is the co-founder of FONHARE. She is the personnel manager and will also be your direct supervisor and amazing host. She works with all pathologies but her specialty is Orthopedics and musculoskeletal. She is originally from Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.

Haiti occupies the western part of the island of Haiti or Hispaniola, which is shared with the Dominican Republic. It has a rich and complex history, it became the first black republic in the world, born from the slave revolt, and declared independent in 1804. It is also the second free republic in America after the United States.

The culture of Haiti is very rich, with influences from African ancestors and French colonization as well as Indian and Taino origins.

Local art is vibrant and vivid. Music has a strong influence in Haitian culture. The popular music, Compas, is played and danced at all festivals and concerts across the country and the Caribbean.

Haiti has many diverse dishes but rice and beans remain the base of all dishes. You can easily find fresh fruits and vegetables, and the meats and cold cuts vary between goat, pork, chicken, beef and fish.

There are two common languages in Haiti, Creole and French. Most Haitians speak and understand Creole, not all speak French.

Many Haitians speak English and Spanish fluently.
